The New TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf

he iconic Heuer Monaco Gulf is back, that is, in a special edition avatar. The symbol of modernised tradition pays homage to personalities such as Jo Siffert, Steve McQueen, and most importantly, the iconic watch brand’s racing history, taking you back to the days of the legendary Jack Heuer.

As far as form and design are concerned, everything about this rendition seems similar. The highlight, that is, the Gulf Oil dial-emblazoning tradition continues at the Swiss watchmaker. We have the popular orange-blue combination, a colour-play with Gulf branding. Let’s not forget the signature Gulf stamp right near the six o’clock position.

Key features worth mentioning are the implementation of the iconic Gulf colours into the three o’clock sub dial. This eventually gives off a specific vintage serif-style numerical vibe, as if it is hand-painted in the 1970s. That same stylized typography can be found on the Monaco wordmark itself. Capping things off is a very ’70s presentation of the stripes on the right side of the dial.

Retro Outside, Modern Inside

On the modern front, the watch presents a sunray blue dial, and a deep, tall, numeric 60 at the 12 o’clock position. Instead of displaying the Gulf stamp in all-colour, TAG Heuer chose a more contemporary, all white aesthetic. This is also the first time the TAG Heuer Monaco, a square, slab-sided, sport tool watch, has been launched with the Caliber Heuer 02 Automatic. The automatic movement offers an 80-hour power reserve.

Honest Opinion

The New TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf

The TAG Heuer Gulf Monaco is, without a doubt, a fun watch. There is no doubt about it. No matter how difficult it might be most wrists to fit it properly, we can’t deny its glory. Steve McQueen, the King of Cool himself made this watch popular. Most watch lovers today are aware of the Monaco because he wore it in the movie Le Mans in 1971. That film itself is an iconic piece of art in modern film making.

The new TAG Heuer Gulf Monaco is something of an experiment between vintage and modern aesthetics. The Heuer 02 movement with its built and overall styling makes this a specifically modern variation of the iconic Gulf Monaco timepiece.
