AG Heuer is still giving us a 40 mm Aquaracer yet again, but there is a slight twist this time. Meet the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Solargraph. That’s correct, a solar-powered timepiece packaged in a black DLC-coated steel case with a closed case back bearing the same compass engraving introduced with the Aquaracer Outdoors collection from TAG Heuer watches for men.
The dial features the same horizontal line design that we’ve come to know, only if you look closely you’ll see that it’s quite translucent in order to allow the sunlight to make its way through and power the movement. Aesthetically, there are some differences to the prior 40mm release, such as the placement of the date window at three o’clock as opposed to six o’clock, which is no doubt a product of the shift to a new movement.
Speaking of which, the solar-powered TH50-00 is the result of a partnership between TAG Heuer and the Manufacture of La Joux-Perret based in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The result is a watch that won’t need a battery change due to its re-charging ability. According to the brand, the movement only needs two minutes of direct sunlight to run the watch for an entire day Once it’s fully charged and after less than 20 hours of sunlight, it can run for six months.
Once it stops working, it only needs ten seconds of exposure to make it run again. In addition, the watch has a power save mode engaged by pulling out the crown, which extends its autonomy for three-and-a-half years.
The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph is a 40 mm wide stainless steel beauty. The translucent black dial is designed in a way that it allows sunlight straight into the movement. The applied indices are filled with lume, a little too much if you ask me. Lastly, the 200-meter water resistance is apt for a watch of this stature.
The movement used in this watch is the TH50-00. This is a solar-powered movement that uses the power of the sun to show time. The movement was been made in collaboration with La Joux-Perret.
The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 solargraph is a huge leap for the Swiss watchmaker as it is still a rad thing to do for an established watch brand these days to enter the sustainability market. With the Aquaracer Solargraph, TAG Heuer watches for men and women have entered the leagues of some of the top names who are investing in sustainable watchmaking practices. Some other notable names are Panerai and Cartier.
TAG Heuer has partnered with La Joux-Perret for the solar-powered movement it has used in the watch. One thing to note here is that the company is owned by Citizen. Nonetheless, this step towards sustainable watchmaking practices is a welcomed one.
