wiss watchmaking giant TAG Heuer is celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2020 and in celebration of this memorable milestone, the watch brand has released quite a few references. One of these is a rendition of the mid-1960s reference, the Carrera 45 Dato (Ref. 3147). The watch was iconic as it featured a red date display situated at a very unusual 12 o’clock position. The two references that TAG Heuer has released this year are available in 44 mm wide cases and contrasting bezels and sub dials.
In my opinion, the only thing that connects this watch to the original is the red date display located at the 12 o’clock marker. The rest of the features and aesthetics take inspiration from the modern line of Carrera watches. The large size of the cases, the tachymeter on the bezel, and lastly, the modern H-link styled bracelets, all of them are the design cues that can be easily spotted in the modern day Carrera line-up.
One can say that the purpose of this watch’s design is to merge historical design features of the TAG Heuer era watches into the present-day line up of edgy Carreras timepieces.
There are two references that the brand has released. Both the references are 44 mm wide and mm thick. As mentioned earlier, we have white as well as blue dials with sub-dials that have contrasting color schemes. The reference with the white dial comes with a black ceramic tachymeter bezel. On the other hand, the reference with the blue dial gets a blue ceramic tachymeter bezel.
Three red motion accents can be spotted on the 30-minute chronograph sub-dial. These offer a nice design element that is sporty as well as eccentric. This also echoes with the red date display at 12 o’clock and the red chronograph seconds hand at the centre.
In each reference, the chronograph is highly faithful to the fundamental Carrera design. The entire set up is extremely legible, which actually fits the Carrera’s blueprint. Lastly, the ceramic bezels on top not only look gorgeous and stunning, but they are expected to stay that way for a long time.
The watch, like many present day TAG Heuer Carrera watches, uses the Calibre Heuer 02. The movement is said to be TAG Heuer’s go-to in-house manufactured chronograph mechanism. The movement uses a vertical clutch and a column wheel.
This movement that was originally launched back in the year 2013 as the calibre 1969. Later on its was paused and then eventually brought back in the TAG Heuer line-up for use in 2017’s big launch, the Autavia Heritage Calibre Heuer 02. The TAG Heuer 02 automatic movement has so far been a fantastic chronograph mechanism that offers top-notch service.
